Confronting Parallelism: The View from Berkeley

To explore the important new paper on the challenges of parallelism, "The View from Berkeley," HPCwire talked with NERSC computer scientist John Shalf and David Patterson, professor of computer science at UC-Berkeley. Shalf and Patterson are among the co-authors of "The View from Berkeley."

  • exploit multicore architecture or die (or at least get left behind)
  • current programming models (which Chris Mungall read as OO and other mutable state models) are not suited to multicore architecture
  • new models are needed (which Chris read as: functional message-passing eg erlang or functional + STM eg Haskell)
