A quick and easy way to get the sources (in Debian) is to type apt-get install kernel-source

(you'll need to be root, and probably will need to specify which version of the kernel source you want)

...the "purer" way is to download the sources from http://kernel.org/

-- Ian Holmes, June 05

apt-cache search kernel-source

apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.27

cd/usr/src

There should be a tar file with the kernel source code there:

tar -xvjf kernel-source-2.4.****

This command cleans out your config files, so if you want to keep an old config, back it up before doing this:

make mrproper

From here, there are four options, the last two require some graphics libraries to be installed, and oldconfig is for minor changes:

  1. make config
  2. make oldconfig
  3. make menuconfig
  4. make xconfig
