A brief history
Human coronavirus OC43, or HCoV-OC43, was first isolated in 1967 from volunteers at the Common Cold Unit in Salisbury, United Kingdom. Together with HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43 causes 10-30% of all common colds.

Coronaviruses
Coronaviruses are enveloped, (+)ssRNA viruses which infect animals. Commonly they infect the upper respiratory or GI tract. They are responsible for diseases including the common cold and
SARS. The 5'-end of the genome has a methylated cap and the 3'-end has a poly (A) tract, mimicking host mRNA. Host ribosomes readily attach to the viral genome and initiate translation.
